PhD candidate Dimitris Karagiannis has been awarded with Fulbright Foundation Scholarship in order to conduct research at the Intelligent and Connected Systems Lab in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University, USA.

Dimitris received his degree in Pharmacy in 2013 and his MSc degree in Design and Development of New Pharmaceutical Compounds in 2017, from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA), graduating first in his class. He is passionate about transformative technologies that can shape up the future of healthcare by empowering people to live healthier lives. Since 2017, Dimitris has been working as a Ph.D. student at the Biomedical Simulations and Imaging (BIOSIM) Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens toward the development of an Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) platform able to manage patients’ medications in order to improve medication adherence. *“Technology gives me the opportunity to develop and hold with my own hands a device that tomorrow will be able to improve patients’ lives. I’m fascinated with the immediacy it offers between the idea and the implementation”*, said Dimitris who is also the recipient of a Doctorate Scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY).

During his visit at Columbia University, Dimitris will work on the extension of his IoMT platform to incorporate concepts from the smart cities framework aiming at identifying the medical equipment closest to a patient during an emergency condition. He states that “today is the right time for us to provide feasible ways in order to protect public health using modern technologies”.
