SMARTY is a Self-Assessment and Monitoring Tool for COVID-19 based on Audio Records and Artificial Intelligence

The Biomedical Simulations and Imaging (BioSim) Laboratory and the Artificial Intelligence and Learning Systems (AILS) Laboratory joined forces and participated in #HackCoronaGreece, an online Hackathon co-organised by Dataconomy and the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance that took place on April 7-13. Participants, including 300 selected data scientists, developers, project managers, designers, healthcare experts and psychologists, were asked to craft easy-scalable and marketable solutions and help in tackling the crisis caused by #COVID19. Researchers from BIOSIM lab and AILS lab came up with SMARTY, a Self-Assessment and Monitoring Tool for COVID-19 based on Audio Records and Artificial Intelligence. Among 55 teams, SMARTY made it to the top 5 winners and won the second prize.

SMARTY is an intelligent decision support tool that aims to (i) detect undiagnosed cases of COVID-19, (ii) enable the remote monitoring of patients with COVID-19, and (iii) provide alert signals in case of emergency. SMARTY serves as a personal smart assistant tool for monitoring symptoms, while also supporting healthcare professionals and policy makers in decision-making through advanced data analytics based on Artificial Intelligence. By applying machine learning techniques on heterogeneous data gathered from questionnaires (symptoms, medical history, demographic data, vital signs) and audio recordings (cough, breathing, voice) the team aspires to produce personalized risk scores of the individual’s health status. SMARTY will be hosted on GRNET’s infrastructure.

The team participating in #HackCoronaGreece consisted of: Dr Konstantia Zarkogianni (permanent teaching laboratory staff at BIOSIM), Kostas Mitsis (PhD candidate at BIOSIM), Charalampos Papakonstantinou (PhD candidate at AILS) and Maria Athanasiou (PhD candidate at BIOSIM).
