Professor Konstantina S. Nikita Discusses AI Ethics and Academic Integrity at IEEE AP-S Panel

On September 14, 2026, Professor Konstantina S. Nikita participated in the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S) expert panel, "AI and Integrity: Ethics, Research, Teaching, and Publishing," organized as part of IEEE Ethics Week 2026. The panel was hosted by Dr Sima Noghanian Distinguished Engineer at Belden Inc. and brought together Professor Nikita, Professor Karl Warnick of Brigham Young University, and Professor Cynthia Furse of the University of Utah.

The discussion explored the ethical questions arising from the increasing use of AI across scientific research, education, and scholarly publishing.

Professor Nikita emphasized the importance of transparency, scientific integrity, and human accountability in the use of AI, while also drawing attention to the risk of de-skilling: preserving the expertise and critical judgment that researchers need to recognize when AI-generated results may be incorrect and to evaluate scientific work responsibly.

The panel also considered how the scientific and academic community can adapt established principles of research and publication ethics as AI tools become increasingly integrated into the creation, evaluation, and dissemination of scientific knowledge.
